Overview
Milvus is an open-source, high-performance vector database for AI applications. It organizes and searches large amounts of unstructured data such as text, images and multi-modal information. The project is part of the LF AI & Data Foundation, with Zilliz as its major contributor.
What it does well
Milvus is written in Go and C++ with CPU and GPU hardware acceleration for vector search. Its fully distributed, Kubernetes-native architecture scales horizontally, and it also runs as a single standalone server or as Milvus Lite, a local file-based version installed with the Python SDK. It supports dense and sparse vectors, hybrid search and metadata filtering.
Why it’s in the collection
Milvus is the vector database to pick when the dataset is large and still growing: it is built to scale out across a cluster, yet starts as a local file in Python. It is Apache-licensed and run under a foundation.
