Overview
iTerm2 is a free, open-source terminal emulator for macOS and a replacement for the built-in Terminal app. It brings the terminal into the modern age with features you never knew you always wanted, and has been a favorite of Mac developers for many years.
What it does well
iTerm2 adds split panes, a hotkey window, search across all tabs, autocomplete, copy mode, a paste history, instant replay of recent terminal output, triggers and badges. Shell integration lets it track commands, directories and hosts, and nearly everything is configurable.
Why it’s in the collection
iTerm2 is the default upgrade for anyone who lives in the terminal on a Mac, mature, deeply configurable and free. It is GPL-licensed.
