Overview
TiDB is an open-source, cloud-native, distributed SQL database built for high availability, scalability, strong consistency and high performance. It is compatible with MySQL 8.0, so you can use familiar drivers, frameworks and tools. It runs on-premises, in public clouds or on Kubernetes, and there is also a hosted TiDB Cloud with a free plan.
What it does well
TiDB scales horizontally by adding nodes or vertically with bigger ones, without downtime. Distributed transactions with two-phase commit keep data ACID-compliant, and the Raft consensus protocol stores multiple replicas for automatic failover. It handles both transactional and analytical workloads (HTAP) with a row store and a columnar store kept in sync.
Why it’s in the collection
TiDB lets teams outgrow a single MySQL server without rewriting their application or sharding by hand. It is Apache-licensed and developed by PingCAP.
