Overview
Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS and Linux, and one of the most popular audio apps in the world, with more than 100 million downloads since 2000. It is used for podcasts, music, voice recordings and audio cleanup.
What it does well
Audacity records from microphones and other inputs, edits multiple tracks, mixes them and applies effects, in an app that is faster and simpler than most professional audio workstations. Thanks to its open-source nature, many third-party plugins have been built for it. Optional extras such as free sounds, loops and effects are available through MuseHub, and cloud storage for projects is offered by its maintainers.
Why it’s in the collection
Audacity is the go-to free audio editor for millions of people, from podcasters to students, and has been for more than two decades. It is GPL-licensed.
