Overview
Codex CLI is an open-source coding agent from OpenAI that runs locally on your computer. You install it with npm, Homebrew or a standalone installer, then run codex in a project to have it read, change and run code. It signs in with a ChatGPT plan or works with an API key.
What it does well
Codex CLI runs commands inside a sandbox with approval settings, so you decide what it may touch. It follows project instructions from AGENTS.md files, supports skills and slash commands, and has a non-interactive mode (codex exec) for scripts and CI. The same agent is available as an extension for VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf, and as a desktop app.
Why it’s in the collection
Codex CLI is the open-source client behind one of the most widely used coding agents. The code is Apache-licensed and built in Rust, so you can see exactly what runs on your machine, and other projects such as Open Interpreter build on it.
