Overview
NetBird combines a configuration-free peer-to-peer private network with centralized access control in one platform. It creates a WireGuard-based overlay network that connects your machines over encrypted tunnels, without opening ports, writing firewall rules or running VPN gateways. You can use NetBird Cloud or self-host it.
What it does well
NetBird connects peers directly with kernel WireGuard and falls back to relays when needed, and it can route traffic to external networks, act as an exit node and use domain-based DNS routes. An admin web UI manages groups, access rules, private DNS and users, with SSO and MFA, identity provider integrations, device posture checks and activity logs. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, mobile and more, and has an API and Terraform provider for automation.
Why it’s in the collection
NetBird gives teams a modern replacement for the old VPN that they can fully self-host, with access policies managed in one place. Clients are BSD-licensed and the server components AGPL.
