Overview
OpenTofu is an open-source tool for building, changing and versioning infrastructure safely and efficiently. It is a community-driven fork of Terraform under the Linux Foundation and a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, and it works as a drop-in replacement that keeps your existing Terraform configurations and workflows.
What it does well
With OpenTofu you describe infrastructure in a high-level configuration language that can be versioned and reused like code. It shows an execution plan before changing anything, builds a graph of your resources to create independent ones in parallel, and applies complex changes with little manual work. It works with thousands of existing providers and modules for every major cloud.
Why it’s in the collection
OpenTofu kept infrastructure as code open after Terraform moved to a source-available license, and it is governed by a neutral foundation rather than one company. It is MPL-licensed.
