Overview
Paperless-ngx is an open-source document management system that turns your physical documents into a searchable online archive. You run it on your own server, usually with Docker Compose, and your documents never leave it unless you choose. It is the official successor to the original Paperless and Paperless-ng projects.
What it does well
Paperless-ngx runs OCR on your documents with Tesseract in more than 100 languages and stores them as long-term PDF/A alongside the originals. Machine learning tags each document with correspondents, types and tags automatically, and optional AI features can suggest metadata and let you chat with your documents. The web app has full-text search with highlighting, a customizable dashboard, bulk editing, custom fields, saved views and shareable links. It handles PDFs, images, text and Office files.
Why it’s in the collection
Paperless-ngx is the easiest way to go paperless without uploading your bills, contracts and records to someone else's cloud. It is GPL-licensed and maintained by an active community team.
