Overview
Anki is an open-source flashcard program that uses spaced repetition: it schedules each card so you review it just before you're likely to forget it, so you spend less time studying for the same results. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with mobile apps available too.
What it does well
Anki cards can include audio, images, video and scientific markup, and both card layouts and review timing can be customized. It handles decks of more than 100,000 cards, syncs across devices through the free AnkiWeb service, and can be extended with a large library of add-ons. There are also shared decks for many subjects.
Why it’s in the collection
Anki is the standard tool for anyone who needs to remember a lot, from medical students to language learners, and the desktop app is free. Its AGPL-licensed code has been developed for many years.
