Overview
Payload is an open-source, Next.js-native headless CMS that installs directly into your existing Next.js app folder. It is both a headless CMS and an application framework, so the admin panel and backend live alongside your frontend. You can deploy it anywhere, including serverless platforms like Vercel.
What it does well
With Payload you define content in code and query your database directly from React Server Components. Both the admin panel and the backend are fully extensible, there is no vendor lock-in, and no separate SaaS account is needed. A single command creates a new project.
Why it’s in the collection
Payload brings the CMS into the codebase instead of making it another hosted service, which suits teams building with Next.js. It is MIT-licensed.
