Overview
Temporal is an open-source durable execution platform. Its server runs units of application logic called Workflows in a resilient way, automatically handling intermittent failures and retrying failed operations, so developers can build scalable applications without writing that reliability code themselves. It began as a fork of Uber's Cadence, by Cadence's creators.
What it does well
With Temporal, a workflow written as ordinary code keeps its state and picks up where it left off after crashes, restarts or outages, even if it runs for days or months. SDKs exist for several languages, and a single command starts a local development server. You can self-host the server or use the hosted Temporal Cloud.
Why it’s in the collection
Temporal removes a whole category of hard problems, retries, timeouts and recovering from failure, from application code. Companies like OpenAI, Replit and Retool build on it, and the server is MIT-licensed.
