Overview
Ente is a fully open-source, end-to-end encrypted platform for storing your data in the cloud without having to trust the provider. On top of it the team builds Ente Photos, an alternative to Google Photos and Apple Photos, and Ente Auth, a two-factor authenticator app. Apps are available for iOS, Android, the web, Linux, macOS and Windows.
What it does well
Ente Photos keeps three replicated copies of your photos and offers face detection, semantic search, private sharing, collaborative albums, family plans, easy import and export and background uploads, all end-to-end encrypted. Ente Auth is free. The source code and cryptography have been externally audited. You can use the hosted service, which includes 10 GB of free storage, or self-host the whole stack from the same repository.
Why it’s in the collection
Ente offers the convenience of Google Photos with encryption that means nobody else can see your pictures, and you can self-host it if you prefer. Its code and cryptography have been independently audited.
