Overview
Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do app that handles large numbers of notes organized into notebooks. It is offline first, so all your notes are on your phone or computer, and it runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS. Notes are written in Markdown.
What it does well
Joplin syncs your notes with end-to-end encryption through services like Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or its own Joplin Cloud. It has full-text search on every platform, can be customized with plugins and themes, and includes a web clipper for saving pages and screenshots from your browser. Evernote exports can be imported with their formatting, attachments and metadata.
Why it’s in the collection
Joplin is a dependable, private home for your notes: everything stays on your devices, sync is encrypted, and you choose where it syncs. The apps are AGPL-licensed; one exception is explained below.
License
The Joplin apps are licensed under AGPL-3.0. Joplin Server, the optional sync server in the same repository, has its own Joplin Server Personal Use License, which limits how it can be used. You don't need Joplin Server: the apps sync through other services too.
