Overview
License Compatibility Checker is a free, open-source engine from esdecode that tells you whether code under one license can be used in a project under another. It is directional, so using A-licensed code in a B project is treated as a different question from the reverse. You can use it as a TypeScript and Node.js library or through a free web interface, with no account.
What it does well
The checker covers 21 licenses by SPDX identifier, each with structured facts and links to authoritative sources. It is rule-based rather than AI-based, and every rule it triggers has an ID you can look up. It highlights copyleft, attribution, source-disclosure and commercial-use obligations, analyzes projects with multiple licenses, and marks unknown or ambiguous cases for manual review instead of guessing. The library has no runtime dependencies.
Why it’s in the collection
License Compatibility Checker gives developers a transparent, explainable first answer to a question that usually needs a lawyer or an expensive compliance tool. It is MIT-licensed. It is a young project, so check its results for important decisions.
