Overview

Lightpanda is a headless browser designed for AI agents, automation and crawling. It is not a Chromium fork or a WebKit patch but a new browser written in Zig, which runs JavaScript without rendering graphics. It runs as a binary or Docker image.

What it does well

Lightpanda exposes a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) server, so existing Puppeteer, Playwright and chromedp scripts can connect to it. The project reports it is 16x lighter and 9x faster than Chromium in its benchmark of 933 real web pages. It installs through Homebrew, the AUR or nightly builds for Linux and macOS.

Why it’s in the collection

Lightpanda rethinks the browser for machines instead of people, which makes large-scale scraping and agent browsing much cheaper. It is AGPL-licensed.
