Overview
Neovim is an open-source text editor built from Vim, refactored to make it easier to maintain, extend and build user interfaces on. It keeps Vim's modal editing and works with most Vim plugins, and adds Lua configuration, a built-in language server client and an API that other programs can drive. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, in the terminal or inside a GUI.
What it does well
Neovim is configured in Lua, which makes plugins fast and configs easier to write. It has a built-in LSP client for code intelligence, Tree-sitter parsing for accurate syntax highlighting and text objects, an embedded terminal and asynchronous jobs. Its API can be called from almost any language, so it can be embedded in IDEs, browsers and other editors, and many separate GUIs are built on it.
Why it’s in the collection
Neovim turned Vim into a modern, programmable editor that people shape around exactly how they work, with a huge plugin ecosystem. It's fast, runs anywhere, and is developed in the open by its community.
