Overview
Lumo is an AI assistant made by Proton, the company behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN and Proton Drive. It is designed so your conversations stay confidential: Proton says it doesn't record your chats or use them to train models, and saved chat history is protected with zero-access encryption. Lumo runs on the web, with apps for Android and iOS.
What it does well
Lumo answers questions, helps with writing and research, and works with files you upload, like other AI assistants, but with Proton's privacy approach: no tracking of conversations and encrypted chat history. You can use it without an account, and the Android app adds features such as voice entry and is also available on F-Droid.
Why it’s in the collection
Lumo is a mainstream-friendly AI assistant from a company with a long track record in privacy, and its mobile apps are open for anyone to inspect. Only the apps are open source, though, as explained below.
License
Only Lumo's mobile apps are open source: the Android and iOS apps are published under GPL-3.0, and the Android app is a wrapper around the Lumo web app. The Lumo service itself, including the AI models behind it, runs on Proton's servers and can't be self-hosted, so Lumo as a whole isn't an open-source product.
