Overview
SurfSense is an open-source desktop app for documents you can't upload: a NotebookLM-style AI agent that researches, transforms and edits your documents on your own machine. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Its hosted web app was retired in October 2026 in favour of the desktop app.
What it does well
SurfSense gives cited answers across PDFs (including scanned pages), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, images, Markdown and HTML. It can create documents from your own templates, edit Word files as tracked changes, fill and flatten PDF forms, merge and split PDFs, and analyse spreadsheets with charts.
Why it’s in the collection
SurfSense brings NotebookLM-style research to private files that should never leave your computer. It is Apache-licensed.
