Apache SkyWalking

Overview
Apache SkyWalking is an open-source application performance monitoring (APM) system from the Apache Software Foundation, designed for microservices, cloud-native and container-based architectures. It provides monitoring, tracing and diagnosis for distributed systems, and now also covers AI workloads such as model calls and agent activity.
What it does well
SkyWalking offers end-to-end distributed tracing with service topology maps and dashboards, and has agents for Java, .NET Core, PHP, Node.js, Go, Lua, Rust, C++, Python and browser JavaScript. Its eBPF-based Rover agent profiles Kubernetes deployments. It accepts metrics, traces and logs from Zipkin, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and others, stores them in its own BanyanDB database, and supports alerting and log processing pipelines. A single cluster can handle more than 100 billion telemetry records.
Why it’s in the collection
SkyWalking gives teams a complete, production-grade APM without per-host pricing, and it is governed by the Apache Software Foundation. It is Apache-licensed.
